Tour #4 - The Rodney Bay & Pigeon Island TourRodney Bay
There are palm trees for shade, white sand for effect and every possible facility, including plenty of shops that rent water-sports gear. This is one of the few beaches that feature parasailing. Windsurfing, sailing, motorized water biking, water-skiing and snorkeling are all available here. Pigeon Island Pigeon Island, a 40-acre islet connected by a causeway to St. Lucia's west coast, is a beautiful nature park which reflects a thousand years of history. Pigeon Island was a Carib settlement, a pirate's hideout and the site of one of the strongest fortifications on St. Lucia. There are marked trails with a number of historical sites, like the remains of an 18th-century British fort and Fort Rodney, where the Admiral for which it is named spied on the French ships from its strategic viewpoint. The famous English admiral used its heights to monitor the French fleet on Martinique. The view was responsible for his devastating defeat of the French fleet in 1782, a battle that cost France the Caribbean.
The Pigeon Island Museum & Interpretive Center, displaying the island's history, is housed in a landmark former British officers' mess building, restored to its 1808 elegance. Through interactive
audio/visual aids and ancient artifacts, visitors learn about the first Carib
Indian settlers and the island's role in the French/British battles during
colonization. A highlight is Admiral Rodney's victory in 1782 at the famous
"Battle of the Saints." The museum opens daily 9:00am to 5:00pm. The Jean-Baptiste Studio: Fine Art on Silk The Jean-Baptiste studio is located on the northern tip of St. Lucia (10 minutes from Rodney Bay) in beautiful Cap Estate where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Jean-Baptiste and his family moved back to St. Lucia in 1995. His work reflects the beauty of the island. His style is fresh, unique, and lures art collectors worldwide. Each piece is hand painted on 100% Chinese silk using water base silk liquid colour and resist. The finished work is water resistant and light fast. His work is in the collections of South Africa's President, Nelson Mandela, Noble Laureate Derek Walcott, USA Secretary of State Colin Powell, Singer/Song writer Paul Simon, CEO of Sandals Gordon Butch Stewart, and many other valued collectors. To date Jean-Baptiste collection consists of limited edition mono prints hand painted on silk. Jean-Baptiste experiments with colour, light, and texture making each piece actually a one-of-a-kind treasure. While in St. Lucia visitors can arrange a private studio showing at Jean-Baptiste's Cap Estate home (450-8000). Sightseeing and Shopping in St. LuciaSt. Lucia demands to be explored. There's basically one main road that circles the entire island, so chances of losing your way are slim indeed. Be prepared for narrow roads, dogleg cruces, hairpin turns and more potholes than you will care for; but be assured the trip is worth every twist and gasp.
